Quick answer

A passing SIE result is valid for four years. If you do not pass a qualifying representative-level top-off exam (Series 6, 7, 22, 79, 82, 86/87, 99) within four years of passing the SIE, you will need to retake the SIE.

Full details

SIE result validity:

Validity period: 4 years from your pass date
Counts toward registration: Only when paired with a passing top-off exam

What "valid for 4 years" means in practice:
- You can sit for the SIE today and apply for a top-off later
- The 4-year clock starts the day you pass the SIE
- If 4 years pass without a top-off, your SIE result expires and must be retaken

This is unique to the SIE. Most other FINRA exams do not expire on their own. The 4-year window exists because the SIE was designed as an entry-level exam that should be paired with role-specific qualification exams.
