What is the SIE?

The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) is FINRA's entry-level exam testing basic securities industry knowledge. 75 scored questions, 1h 45m, 70% to pass. Anyone 18+ can register directly with FINRA for $100, no sponsor required. Results stay valid four years.

Passing the SIE is the first step into a finance career. It signals to employers that you understand the basics of products, markets, and customer rules, and lets you walk into interviews already qualified for the co-requisite portion of any representative-level license. From there you pair it with a top-off exam (Series 6 or Series 7) and a state-law exam (Series 63, Series 65, or Series 66) to start working as a registered rep, advisor, or broker. Most candidates sit the SIE before they have a sponsor, which means it's the cheapest, fastest way to de-risk a finance job search and prove you're serious before recruiters even ask.

How it works

  1. Take a full practice exam first.

Before you watch a single video, sit a full-length, timed practice exam in the Prometric view. No music, no phone, no interruptions. The end-of-exam report ranks every unit by your score and its weight on the real exam: that report is your study plan.

  2. Work units by the report, not the book.

Go down the report list in order. The lowest-scoring unit isn't always the most valuable to fix. CertFuel sorts by weakest area combined with how many points the unit is worth on the real exam, so your time goes where it actually moves your score.

  3. Run the unit loop, then move on.

For each unit: watch the videos, listen to the podcast, do one Study Quiz and one Flashcard session, read the section, then do one more Quiz and Flashcard set. Don't camp on a single unit. Fly through the content and trust the loop to tighten it up.

  4. Take a full practice exam every week.

Once a week, sit another timed practice exam. New weak units will surface as old ones improve. Re-rank your queue and run the loop again on whatever's at the top.

  5. Book the real exam after three 75%+ practice exams in a row.

Real-exam scores tend to land within a few points of your last full practice exam. Three consecutive practice exams at 75% or above is the readiness signal. 80%+ if you want margin for a bad day.

Frequently asked

What is the SIE exam?

The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) is an introductory FINRA exam that covers basic securities industry knowledge. It's a co-requisite for all representative-level exams including the Series 6, Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66.

Do I need a sponsor to take the SIE?

No. Unlike the Series 7 or Series 6, you do not need to be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to take the SIE. Anyone 18 or older can register directly with FINRA.

What's the passing score?

You need a 70% or higher to pass. The exam has 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored experimental questions, and you have 1 hour and 45 minutes to finish.

How long does it take to prepare?

Most candidates are exam-ready in 2 to 4 weeks of consistent study. Full-time students often finish faster; working professionals spreading study across evenings and weekends usually land in that window.

What happens if I fail?

You can retake the SIE, but you must wait 30 days after the first and second attempts, and 180 days after a third attempt. The exam fee applies to each attempt.

Does the SIE expire?

Yes. SIE results are valid for four years. If you don't pass a qualifying representative-level exam within that window, you'll need to retake the SIE.

What exams come after the SIE?

The SIE pairs with a FINRA "top-off" representative exam (Series 6 for mutual-fund and variable-product reps, Series 7 for general securities reps) and then a state-law exam (Series 63 for agents, Series 65 for investment advisers, or Series 66 covering both). Most candidates pick their stack based on the role they're targeting.

Is CertFuel actually free?

Yes, completely. No credit card, no trial, no paywalled "premium" tier. All 4,000+ practice questions, flashcards, lessons, and the exam-readiness score are free for the SIE.
