What is the Series 65?

The Series 65 is NASAA's Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination. 130 scored questions, 180 minutes, 72% to pass, and a $187 fee through FINRA testing centers. No SIE, no sponsor, no co-requisite. Pass it and you qualify to register as an investment adviser representative at the state level.

The Series 65 is the standard route for fee-based advisers, RIAs, and career changers coming from CPA, attorney, or banking backgrounds. Active CFP, CFA, ChFC, PFS, and CIC holders may qualify for a waiver in many states. Once registered, you can charge clients for advice without holding a brokerage license, which is why this exam has been the fastest-growing path into the advisory industry.

How it works

  1. Take a full practice exam first.

Before you watch a single video, sit a full-length, timed practice exam in the Prometric view. No music, no phone, no interruptions. The end-of-exam report ranks every unit by your score and its weight on the real exam: that report is your study plan.

  2. Work units by the report, not the book.

Go down the report list in order. The lowest-scoring unit isn't always the most valuable to fix. CertFuel sorts by weakest area combined with how many points the unit is worth on the real exam, so your time goes where it actually moves your score.

  3. Run the unit loop, then move on.

For each unit: watch the videos, listen to the podcast, do one Study Quiz and one Flashcard session, read the section, then do one more Quiz and Flashcard set. Don't camp on a single unit. Fly through the content and trust the loop to tighten it up.

  4. Take a full practice exam every week.

Once a week, sit another timed practice exam. New weak units will surface as old ones improve. Re-rank your queue and run the loop again on whatever's at the top.

  5. Book the real exam after three 75%+ practice exams in a row.

Real-exam scores tend to land within a few points of your last full practice exam. Three consecutive practice exams at 75% or above is the readiness signal. 80%+ if you want margin for a bad day.

Frequently asked

What is the Series 65?

The NASAA Series 65 (Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination) qualifies you to act as an investment adviser representative (IAR) in most states. It covers economics, investment vehicles, client recommendations, ethics, and securities law. Pass it, register at the state level, and you can charge fees for advice.

How much does CertFuel Series 65 prep cost?

Series 65 prep on CertFuel is free for the rest of 2026 (through December 31, 2026). Full access to practice questions, flashcards, adaptive quizzes, and the Exam Readiness Score, with no credit card required.

Do I need the SIE before the Series 65?

No. The Series 65 has no SIE prerequisite, no sponsor requirement, and no other co-requisite. Anyone can register directly through FINRA testing centers and sit for it.

What's the passing score?

You need 72% (94 of 130 scored questions) to pass. The exam includes 10 additional unscored experimental questions, so you actually answer 140 in 180 minutes.

How long does it take to prepare?

Most candidates pass in 4 to 8 weeks of consistent study, putting in 1 to 2 hours per day. Career changers and CPAs often finish faster; first-time test-takers usually land in the 6 to 8 week range.

Will my CFP or CFA waive the Series 65?

Most states grant a Series 65 waiver if you hold an active CFP, CFA, ChFC, PFS, or CIC credential, but the rules vary state by state. Check our state requirements pages for the specific waiver and registration rules where you'll practice.

What if I fail?

You can retake the Series 65 after a 30-day waiting period for the first and second failed attempts, and 180 days after a third. The exam fee applies to each attempt.

How is CertFuel different from Kaplan or STC?

Traditional courses give you 600+ pages and hope something sticks. CertFuel uses adaptive drilling, spaced repetition, and topic-weighted practice so your study time targets what's actually on the exam. The Exam Readiness Score tells you when you're ready, no guessing.
